Gottman Couples Therapy

I am a trained Level 3 certified Gottman Couples Therapist.

The Gottman Method for Healthy Relationships is a form of couples-based therapy and education that draws on the pioneering studies of relationships by psychologist John M. Gottman and clinical practice conducted by John Gottman and his wife, psychologist Julie Gottman. Nearly 40 years of research have led John Gottman to identify the elements it takes for relationships to last—among all types of couples across all phases of life.

There are nine components of what the Gottman call The Sound Relationship House, from partners making mental maps of each other’s world to learning how to break through relationship gridlock. One of the reigning insights of the science-based approach is that in the dynamics of relationship systems, negative emotions like defensiveness and contempt have more power to hurt a relationship than positive emotions have to help a relationship. As a result, the structured therapy focuses on developing understanding and skills so that partners can maintain fondness and admiration, turn toward each other to get their needs met (especially when they are hurting), manage conflict, and enact their dreams—and what to do when they mess up (because everyone does).

Gottman Method Couples’ Therapy combines the knowledge and wisdom of almost four decades of research and clinical practice by the Gottman Institute

Through interventions and exercises, the Gottman Method helps you and your partner break through barriers to achieve greater understanding, connection and intimacy in your relationship. Gottman Method Couples’ Therapy is a structured, goal-oriented, scientifically based therapy.

This evidenced based approach to couples counselling has 3 phases. The first phase is assessment, before we can successfully help you repair, rebuild or rejuvenate your relationship we first have to understand how it got there. You will attend both together for your first appointment where we will explore why you have come to couples therapy now, taking a history of your relationship to establish how it has developed over time. Then you both will complete a very thorough online assessment and once that is done I will see you each for one individual session each so we can understand your own unique history and perspective. From then on every session will be a couple session.

Couple Counselling can be managed through face to face clinic sessions or via online videoconferencing.
